Title description

The two-part epic feature film is the most prestigious project of late Stalinist cinema. It represents great communist ideas, which are personified in the film by the fearless Stalin himself. It is also interesting that the role of the Nazi leader Hermann Göring was played by Jan Werich in an original way. The last days of the Second World War are at their peak and the Red Army is heading for its last military stand - to conquer Berlin. Against the background of these dramatic events, the story of the heroic caster Alexey and the teacher Nataša takes place. He drags the Soviets to Berlin, she is drastically dragged off to a concentration camp. They only meet together in the liberated streets of the German metropolis at the moment when one of the saddest chapters in human history has finally closed.

Trivia
The scene at the end of the movie where Iosif Stalin appears in Berlin never occurred. After seeing this in the film, Stalin told the filmmaker that he had wished he had gone to Berlin.

    Goofs
    Hitler's dog Blondi was not killed by Eva Braun, as in the movie, but by Hitler's doctor Werner Haase.

A classic of its kind
In the annals of movies that afford rich entertainment in ways totally unintended by their makers, The Fall of Berlin occupies an honoured place.

The story, the vicissitudes of a soldier at the front and his sweetheart in a German forced labour camp, is juxtaposed with sequences of Stalin and Hitler conducting the war.

Stalin, wise, kind and, of course, a supreme military leader is a hoot, but it is Hitler who rivets and enthralls. In scenes overdrawn to the point of parody and beyond, all livid blues and menacing shadows, actor V. Savelyev delivers a performance that should have had him sent to the gulag for upstaging his fellow despot. In his final, hilarious scene, his dog Blondi is despached by a spiked canape delivered by Eva Braun during their wedding breakfast - surely the cinema's finest death scene!
