The surviving heroes gradually have to face not only the undead, but also strained relationships with each other. The raw effect of the film stems primarily from the way Romero defies the conventions of the genre and in the depiction of gory violence. Night of the Living Dead ushered in a new era of cinematic horror and became one of the most groundbreaking films of all time.
